TYPE DESIGN + LAYOUT
Old Growth: Type Specimen Book
The Smithsonian Institution currently utilizes a default Adobe typeface that doesn’t reflect the fundamental educational aspects of its museums. This project created an opportunity to develop an original typeface that would further elevate the reputation of the Smithsonian.
Old Growth is a typeface designed for this purpose. The type combines the legibility of Palatino and the elegancy of Garamond along with organic shapes found within the Natural History Museum itself. This specimen can be used in both large and small contexts while maintaining clarity. Frutiger would be the ideal type pairing, as its bold, low-contrast strokes complement the high-contrast strokes of Old Growth. A specimen  book details the entire type family and examples of its usages within the Smithsonian brand.
